The Auditor General is not a Cabinet Minister and does not attend Cabinet meetings. However, this position is established at the same level as that of a full Cabinet Minister. This is to ensure appropriate resources, status and stature are provided for the office to function independently. Similar to the Chief Justice, Auditor General’s position is higher than Cabinet ranking because his responsibilities include ensuring accountability of the whole Government including the President. The real issue is not which position is higher or lower but whether the office has full independence, status and adequate resources to function independently given the demands on the newly appointed independent Auditor General.
