Current Auditor General


Auditor General Hassan Ziyath was appointed as the Auditor General of the Republic of Maldives on 24th November 2014. Prior to his appointment he worked at the Maldives Pension Administration Office as the Director of Finance and Fund Management.

He started his career with KPMG Maldives and has over 15 years of experience in the accounting and finance industry. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), United Kingdom.

The Auditor General is a constitutional position elected by the Parliament and appointed by the President, for a term of seven years with the option for re-appointment for a second term of five years. The Auditor General’s responsibilities and powers are stated in the Audit Act. The mandate of the Auditor General includes the audit of public sector budget entities including ministries, government departments, independent state institutions, local councils and state owned enterprises.

In discharging these duties, the Auditor General conducts financial statements audits, compliance audits, performance and special audits according an annual work plan submitted to the Parliament.

The reports of the Auditor General are submitted to the President, the Parliament and published on the website www.audit.gov.mv.

In addition to the audit mandate the Auditor General is also responsible for the development and regulation of audit profession in the Maldives and issues licence to the private sector to practice audit in the Maldives. The President, Ministers and specified heads of state institutions are also required to file their assets declarations annually to the Auditor General.

The Auditor General Office is a member of the INTOSAI and ASOSAI.

Under his leadership, the Auditor General Office has achieved a number of milestones, including the timely reporting of statutory audit reports, inauguration of three-year strategic plan, establishment of Institute of Audit and Assurance, issuance of audit licence to local audit professionals. The Auditor General is also currently prioritising to develop the accounting and audit profession in the country through the establishment of a chartered accounting body in the Maldives.
